So what is Digital Marketing?
In the term “Digital MARKETING,” the emphasis and focus should be more on Marketing than digital. Why?
Marketing is the process of getting potential clients or customers interested in your products and services. It is the art of creating, communicating, and delivering that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society.
If you think marketing is the new buzz word, then you are wrong. Marketing has existed from the preliterate society. Just the medium has changed.
The Silk Route, a historic ancient trade route dated from the 2nd century BC until the 14th century AD, stretched from Asia to the Mediterranean. It served as a perfect marketplace for exchanging goods and ideas.
Medieval India saw the emergence of “Mandis,” where nearby villages brought their produce to sell, and the market streets were called “Haat.”
The idea of marketing today is the result of the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th century. Innovations in technology and science resulted in mass production. Growth of transport infrastructure and mass media pushed producers to establish advanced ways of handling and distributing goods.
Modern Marketing was born. Internet Revolution paved the way for Digital Marketing, where Digital is the medium or platform where the marketing occurs.
DIGITAL marketing is associated with marketing techniques delivered over a digital channel, especially the Internet via mobile, search engines, websites, social media, email, and mobile. Companies make use of these apps to promote their goods, services, and brands.

1. Laws of Marketing:
“Marketing is not a battle of products. It is a battle of perceptions.” Al Ries and Jack Trout.
Marketing is scientific in nature. A good product sells by itself. Product is the King, and his subjects are the customers. The King has won the battle when his subjects are happy and satisfied.
The Law of Marketing is also known as the Law of Perception. Because marketing starts even before creating the product, a product is designed to satisfy and fulfil the client’s needs and should be able to retain them.
“People do not buy goods and services. They buy relations stories and magic.”
So how do you build trust?
To win the trust, you need to create a good brand. Customer perception is essential because it is he/she who collects information about the product and interprets the data to give it a meaningful image. It is the promises and commitment you have to keep.
Dunzo App is the perfect example of how they built trust with their customers during the pandemic. They became our central distribution system, delivered everything from grocery, medicines, duplicate keys, household items, etc., to our doorstep. The trust and service made them an irreplaceable part of our life.
2. The Four P’s of Marketing:
The four Ps of Marketing by E.J. McCarthy are:
1. Product: Features, Brand and Packaging services
2. Place: Channel, Inventory, Logistics, and Distribution
3. Price: Discounts, Bundling, and Credit terms
4. Promotion: Advertising, Salesforce, Publicity and Sales promotion
3. Building a Strong Brand:
“Products are made in the factory, but brands are created in mind.” Walter Landor
When I say Amazon, Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc., what ideas emerge in your mind?
Lifestyle, Imagination, Liberty Gained, Hopes, Dreams, Aspirations, Innovation, giving people power through technology.
Branding is the entire customer experience, everything from the logo to social media experience, customer support, and satisfaction.
In short, your brand is the way the customer perceives you.
A good and strong brand helps you:
· To promote recognition and generate referrals
· A good brand helps you sets you apart from the competition
· It tells you about your business DNA
· Provides motivation and direction for your staff
· Helps customer know what to expect and your promise to the customer
· Helps you connect with the brand with the customers emotionally
Millions of people watch Apple’s iPhone event live stream. Why?
Apple’s branding strategy focuses on emotions; its core competence is to provide outstanding customer experience through excellent user interfaces.
4. Good communication skills:
Sophisticated spoken English, high vocabulary, and impeccable grammar don’t mean strong communication skills. If you can effectively communicate knowledge and features about the product, you are a good marketer.
So how can one improve one’s communication skills?
By following these simple strategies:
·Read books, blogs, magazines, and your favourite sections in the newspaper
· Read the book Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis
5. Basics of Global and Indian economy:
Before launching any product, it is vital to understand the global and Indian economy. It helps to understand individuals, companies, markets, and governments, and it will, therefore, respond to the challenges and opportunities. Ultimately, it is the nation’s purchasing power that will purchase the commodity.
6. Traditional versus Digital Marketing:
Traditional Marketing refers to marketing that isn’t online like:
- Print (magazines, newspapers, etc.)
- Broadcast (TV, radio, etc.)
- Direct Mail (catalogues, postcards, etc.)
- Telephone (telemarketing, SMS marketing, etc.)
- Outdoor (billboards, flyers, etc.)
Advantages of Traditional Marketing:
1. Reach and target local audience
2. Promotional materials can be retained
3. Easy to understand, knowledge of the Internet is not needed
Disadvantages of Traditional Marketing:
1. Less engaging between the medium used and the customer
2. Printing, advertisements on TV and radio are expensive
3. Difficult to measure the campaigns ROI
4. Cannot do personalized communication, natural sales, and deep marketing
Traditional marketing has its own charm, simple, yet able to pass on the message effectively.
How can one forget the Amul and Fevicol ads?
Digital Marketing is becoming widely popular due to cultural, technological, and societal shifts.
Promoted tweets, influenced trips, tasty videos, Tik Tok is evidence of effective digital marketing. It is crucial for business today as the Internet is the most used tools as more people log on to the web to carry out day-to-day activities like purchasing goods and services.
Advantages of Digital Marketing:
1. Can target a vast audience and tap new markets
2. Content can be more engaging
3. Cost-effective, instant publicity, and instant results
4. The target audience can choose the medium
5. Measuring ROI is easier
6. Helps in brand building
7. Round the clock availability
Disadvantages of digital marketing
1. Negative feedback
2. Requires expertise in the field
3. Regulation by search engines
So which method should you choose?
Looking at the Indian population digital medium’s statistics, it is no way close to the TV. Depending upon the target and the product, marketing should be chosen; if the target audience has limited digital media access, traditional methods should be used. If your target is the English speaking tech-savvy crowd, you’ll have to go in for the digital medium.
7. The CATT Marketing Funnel
Wealth= n^CATT
N Stands for niche
CATT stands for:
· Content
· Attention
· Trust
· Transaction
How does CATT work?
1. You need to choose your niche first, which is based on:
a. Passion
b. Talent
c. Market requirements
Passion+Talent+Market Oppurtunity=Niche Domination
“The Riches are in the Niches” is a famous quote in the marketing world.
1. Niche is a narrow segment where you will be known as a market leader or a brand. Your success and wealth depend on the niche you choose.
2. Content: Content accumulation for the selected niche is the next step. It could be in the form of:
· Blog posts
· Videos
· Lead magnets

3. Attention: Your content is ready to draw people’s attention through various resources such as SEO, ad reference, and social media networks that drive traffic to your website, blog, or any social media platform.
4. Trust: The attention you can grab indirectly is building trust with the audience. Trust is a crucial factor for building brands. It is not immediate. More you can build trust, the stronger the brand you can create. Companies use digital technology to directly talk to consumers by having proper feedback to solve issues and interact with them.
5. Transaction: Now it’s time to turn all the customers’ interest and confidence into leads and through natural sales. A satisfied consumer becomes a marketer and tries to promote the goods across different channels, which gives growing leads to consumers, and this word-to-mouth marketing continues.
8. Integrated Digital Marketing:
Integrated digital marketing is like a team where content is the leader and the various digital methods or like the team members. Instead of asking each member to increase the customer base, integrated digital marketing will use each member’s trends and produce more than individual achievements.
The flow chart describes the process of integrated digital marketing:
1. Content: Quality content helps to create attention and trust, connects the brand audience, creates a tribe, and becomes brand ambassadors for the consumers.
2. Email: It is the best tool available to online marketers for communication. It helps send out new content material and follow up on the product service prospects they choose to purchase.
3. Social Media: Social Media helps to build a positive digital footprint. Sharing a good piece of content on social media will have a snowball effect.
4. Search: Helps potential customers to find the products and the content.
5. Paid Ads: Paid advertisements in their various formats can help speed up the entire process. The integrated digital marketing process is like a catalyst for promotions, which maximizes the ROI.
